Shrek
SHREK THE MUSICAL, based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage.
In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a SHORT temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand...and his name is Shrek.
Featuring a terrific score of 19 all-new songs, big laughs, great dancing and breathtaking scenery, WWOR-TV proclaims SHREK THE MUSICAL, “FAR, FAR AND AWAY THE FUNNIEST NEW MUSICAL ON BROADWAY!”
SHREK THE MUSICAL is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and all irreverent fun for everyone.

Next to Normal

This highly-anticipated musical will arrive in Charlotte starring its acclaimed Tony Award-winning star, Alice Ripley.

July 14th-16th 2011
Die Roten Punkte
Back by popular demand to “Rock-Bang” Charlotte, Die Roten Punkte (Otto and Astrid Rott) pump up the musical intensity in their high-powered "return concert." At least they would, if they could ever get all the mikes, guitars and stools working at the same time. Otto and Astrid's attempts to perform numbers from their first album are constantly interrupted by technical hitches, and it's impossible to figure out which are real and which are feigned.
Whatever the truth, the brother-sister act is always amusing, trying to keep up a rock 'n' roll appearance while endlessly bickering. There's something intensely funny about their German accents, their suspiciously close relationship, Otto's lipstick and eye shadow, and Astrid's antics with drumsticks.
As they play with our stereotypes of trashy Euro bands, they (eventually) produce high-voltage music that blows the roof off the building. It's a class act, entertaining both musically and comically. If you've ever laughed at Spinal Tap or Flight of the Conchords, then say "Hallo" to your favorite new band, Die Roten Punkte!
July 16th 2011Elvis Costello
Following up on his 2007 appearance at the Belk Theater, Elvis Costello returns to Charlotte and this time he is bringing The Imposters – Steve Nieve on keyboards, Pete Thomas on drums and Davey Faragher on bass – with him for The Revolver Tour. For the first time in 25 years, Costello will let his set-list be chosen by "The Spectacular Spinning Songbook," a monumental game-show wheel that features 40 song-titles, including hits, rarities and very unexpected covers.

September 9th 2011An Evening with Bruce Cockburn
Celebrated Canadian recording artist Bruce Cockburn will be supporting the release of his 31st studio album Small Source of Comfort with an extensive North American tour that includes the McGlohon Theatre. Small Source of Comfort is an adventurous collection of songs of romance, protest and spiritual discovery. The album, primarily acoustic yet rhythmically savvy, is rich in Cockburn’s characteristic blend of folk, blues, jazz and rock. As usual, many of the new compositions come from his travels and spending time in places like San Francisco and Brooklyn to the Canadian Forces base in Kandahar, Afghanistan, jotting down his typically detailed observations about the human experience.
Bruce Cockburn has always been a restless spirit. Over the course of four decades, the celebrated Canadian artist has travelled to the corners of the earth out of humanitarian concerns—often to trouble spots experiencing events that have led to some of his most memorable songs. Going up against chaos, even if it involves grave risks, can be necessary to get closer to the truth.

Il Trovatore
In Italian with English subtitles

Production Presenting Sponsor: The Hearst Corporation
On opposite sides of a political conflict, and rivaling for the affections of the same woman, the Count di Luna and the troubadour Manrico have no idea they are brothers. Lady Leonora is the woman of their dreams but another would be the sibyl of their inescapable nightmare -- Azucena: a gypsy woman whose mother, at the behest of di Luna’s father, was burned at the stake for practicing witchcraft. Bent on revenge she stole the count’s younger brother at birth and raised him as her son. Little does the impassioned and honorable Manrico know that he will be the chief agent in a vow of vengeance that will destroy everything he holds dear. This is a tale where sweet romance is devoured by a force far more rapturous. This time it is the bitter promise that rests beneath every tongue, lingers on every lip.

Yes, the passion and tenderness are rich, but the contract’s monthly renewal option evinces its seriousness for Pinkerton. The storm brewing in the fragile psyche of Butterfly tells a different story however. Despite the urgings of her confidants, dwindling funds, and the pursuit of a rich suitor, even after a three-year absence from her husband she insists he will return. There is a child after all. Surely he would want to be with his wife and son. Much to her excitement, Pinkerton returns and he indeed wants to be with his son. Unfortunately, it is to happen with his American wife who has accompanied him to Japan. For Cio-Cio San there is no choice between living with disgrace and dying with honor.
